Watch here:
Meet Florence!
- Florence is a French existentialist who showcases the meaninglessness of life through her Amazon product reviews, accidentally creating meaning in her life (sometimes).
- She gets giddy at the fantasy of a meaningful but then smacks herself back down into the obvious meaninglessness of all, reminding herself that she still doesn’t care.
- In contrast to Molly the Fonda Fitness Fanatics‘s repressed shadow side, Florence has a repressed sunshine side that attempts to distract her and sneaks out through her cold nonchalant exterior.
- In this episode, Florence is aptly reviewing Kafka’s Metamorphosis (the Existentialist novel about the guy who wakes up as a cockroach), obviously meaningless and she still just doesn’t care!
I’ve seen worse on the metro on a Monday morning.
Florence the French Existentialist (Kafka book review)
Why an existentialist?
I think in middle school I was gifted Albert Camu’s “L’Étranger” in French. The first lines made me laugh, “Aujourd’hui maman est morte. Ou peut-être hier. Je ne sais pas.” I found the ennui glorious. What is the point of it all?
Ironically, I’ve made my whole life about seeking the point of it all. Maybe that does make me existentialist! Either way, I love exploring the differing perspectives of the philosophies within this one French character, who gives the perfect mis-en-place for this existential Jekyll & Hyde.
And obvious I’ve been obsessed with French culture and language since I was 9, so Florence just feels like one of my many alter egos!
What’s Next For This Sketch
Florence has nailed the blaisé. She could go on and on about nothingness and have no feelings about it either way. What she needs is something to get excited for.
Like Molly, once I setup where we are and what we’re doing, I want to hit three sets of the formula: possible meaning / no meaning heightening in intensity each round the climatic statement and wrapping it up on wink and nod callback to the base reality.
Not sure what I mean? It’s okay! I don’t either yet.
But feel free to enjoy the very first original proof of concept compare to the current version to see just how far the videos can change from version to version!
Now compare the first version (a proof of concept) to the second edition to how far changes can go.
